This is not footnoted, though includes reference to America’s importation of Nazi scientists (last part)
Term: fetish, ’1.an object regarded with awe as being the embodiment or habitation of a potent spirit or as having magical potency. 2. any object, idea, etc., eliciting unquestioning reverence, respect, or devotion: to make a fetish of high grades. 3. Psychology. any object or nongenital part of the body that causes a habitual erotic response or fixation.’ source: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/fetish
A note on fetish: Early humans grouped together around fetish. Fetish became manifestations of religion. In the modern age, religion recedes, and the fetish reappears, in pop stars, and the like, as well as consumer gadgetry.
Separated from, what I see as an organic (not in the Durkheim-ian sense) base of community, civil society is being supplanted by communities based on information technology, and as such, people’s orientation to ethics, and accountability are changing.
This in part is caused by people using video screens and bottoms to manually access and gain sources for information, as opposed to newsprint, and paper. Also, where letter writing used to be used texting is being done, through twitter, facebook, e-mails. Both of these change the construction process of letter writing, and the accessing process, and attention to news and information. I would argue as some have done in media studies, that attention spans are shortening, and communications have become briefs.
This equates with a quantity over quality situation. Such manifestation of this in the past has been seen with increases in the manufacturing of food (processed food), to give you the most simple example. Today, less measurable than the effects of processed food on heath are the effects of hand held communication devices to get news and communicate, communication avenues such as Facebook and twitter (overabundance of ‘friends or not ). If one looks at these sources we may see egoistic or even narcissistic displays, on one extreme, and measured connections to classmates, distant family and friends, or professional associations on the opposite.
Time spent by some many individuals on Facebook, and other sources like it may constitute an affliction similar to hours of computer gaming, or television viewing for that matter, but since this is communication with individuals it is masked by the myth that one is achieving a modern variant of civil society, or healthy socializing.
These modes of communication do offer much for those with niche interests or hobbies, as well as specialists, professionals or amateurs in any field, but what may be happening is a further isolation of the individual, especially in America. Americans, the majority, can count the following as making up the majority of out of classroom/work time spatial: car, living room/back yard, strip mall parking lots.
This is confining for individuals in society and it is not out of step with known facts regarding modernization in western culture. Are these new communication devices and modes of gaining information taking us away from physical gathering, and accumulation of knowledge, respectively? Social development did not occur in the living room, nor did the French Revolution. Knowledge can never be replaced with simply gaining an abundance of information. (See Habermas on Civil Society: http://www.users.muohio.edu/mandellc/myhab.htm)
More information is available, and more communication is achievable, but what may lay absent in this is the acquisition of knowledge, while communication becomes a mass fetish.
The fetish of hand held communication devices, and short texts to multiple individuals using video screens and keyboards may over time result in a population de-cultivating itself, becoming philistine, or what is known in Hebrew as פְּלִשְׁתִּים, p’lishtim, and in Arabic as فلسطينيون . These cultures or ethnicities have roots in antiquity, and have been contained within orthodox or traditional practices. Such manifestations of these ethnic and religious groups have protective measures that for centuries have held on to what has been cultivated and developed.
Technology today unmeasured in its effects on society may be deteriorating civility, culture, and quality of societal associations. Though they can serve humankind, they can also erode a kind of quality. Just as processed food (from manufacturing) increases the risk to diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and more, the today’s technology and accompanying advances in communications may result in social and political maladies, ethics included.
As Martin Heidegger wrote concerns about with such statements as this one “The will to mastery becomes all the more urgent the more technology threatens to slip from human control.” That control I would say would be control coming from a body inclusive of all members of society. When groups within society control say the means of manufacturing, there is a loss of autonomy in the class of people who must make ends meet through being employed by the manufacturing sector. The rise of the middle class in Europe and North America in the last century, and the spread of education, meant that greater controls were put in place so as not to disenfranchise the working class. Privileges were spread more widely than in past generations, doing away with cruel inequities found in the 1800s. Members are selected from societies, who then are specialized in addressing decision making that will impact all in society. Such becomes democracy when these members are chosen by the population at large. Transparency in this decision making processes come from open journalism, freedom of the press, and reports directly from decision making bodies.
Concerning technologies written about by 4812 開, there are no transparencies. Coupled with this is a population that has become almost philistine, lacking critical concerns, as well as the training for critical thought. Speaking basically of the US population. Do I have supportive evidence from academia for this? Better, I have first hand ethnographic data to support this.
My own experience is talking with people from varying walks of life is 1. Acknowledgement of ethical concerns from war to social issues, but ventured at in conversation more as socializing. And 2. Statements regarding ethics of policy that impinge on life to death matters, may often be prefaced with an “it’s a matter of opinion”, when in fact the topics queried after are well defined by international and US constitutional law, and are questions of right and wrong. Principles or the lack there of, do not plague the average individual here in the United States, in this writer’s opinion.
Principles are lost to a people who gaze at television for hours per day, as if cattle grazing on grass. Space becomes confining with automobiles, living rooms with wide screen televisions, parking lots, supermarkets and strip malls. With more mobility but less social space there is less room for civil society. Compare this to the wide streets of European cities or the open markets, tea houses; curb side gatherings of Asian Societies.
With that there seems room for undisclosed emergent technologies based on neuroscience, and the exercised testing of them on civilian populations. Ethics and principles have been lost to a desensitized population (Hollywood movies, Images of Iraq getting bombed while all watch on television)
If one does not know what I am talking about, Carole Smith, a practicing psychoanalyst in the UK states the following:
“A more disturbing use is the system developed for manipulating and disturbing the human mental process using pulsed radio frequency radiation (RFR), and their use as a device for causing negative effects on human health and thinking. The victim, the innocent civilian target is locked on to, and unable to evade the menace by moving around. The beam is administered from space.”

Atrocities are being committed within the US. There is nothing confirmable on the internet regarding this, for the internet may be used to create realities that don’t exist. It is used by criminals to deceive. This writer was misled for months by way of forums set up by criminals who have been organizing the technological assault. Only sources from respected organizations, academics, scholars, scientists and researchers are reliable sources.
The spread of the power of the group responsible for conducting the exercise affecting this writer is great. Even a broadcast news source may be difficult to confirm as orchestrated or real (foot 1.). What would such an orchestration be aimed at? Creating the illusion of operations by renegade groups, as opposed to planned and very organized exercises that have grown out of earlier studies by the CIA (Google MK Ultra). Whether or not there are thousands of victims is a question that some authoritative body could only confirm. But with a population who has lost principles, perhaps no one will ever care enough to instigate this. Whether 100 victims or 10,000, these exercises are real, and spell a slide into an abyss the like we have not seen since Nazi Germany. This is simply true in that these technologies do present an unprecedented capability that in its current manifestation, is exhibiting unbelievable evil, the more so, because of the hidden aspect of these capabilities, and the evidence of psychopathology that is evident in the crimes done. With that, before moving on to the little known fact regarding the US government and Nazi Scientist, as well as war criminals, Carole Smith sketches clearly for the reader that slide into the abyss referred to above:
“The imaginative capacity of the ordinary mind cannot encompass the horror of it. We have attempted to come to terms with the experiments of the Nazis in concentration camps. We now have the prospect of systematic control authorized by men who issue instructions through satellite communications for the destruction of societies while they are driving new Jaguars and Mercedes, and going to the opera.”-

Operation Paperclip.
The Importation of Nazis to United States. No conspiracy entertainment to gaze at and supplement your TV viewing. It is a horrendous reality. There is limited scholarly work on this horrid aspect of US military / intelligence history, but Linda Hunt has written material on this historic reality that should cause anyone to do some thinking about what is hidden in unsolved mysteries, ethical misconduct, and human experimentation in the US.

quote: Hubertus Strughold was a German Nazi aviation medicine scientist who knowingly supervised the murderous experiments at Dachau concentration camp during 1941 and 1942 into the reactions of the human body to low pressure, cold, hypothermia and re-warming using prisoners – many of whom died unnecessarily. Not surprisingly, Strughold was never convicted of his war crimes and after the Second World War like many other Nazi scientists he joined the USAAF to work as a scientist, his research being end quote. John Pilger (http://www.johnpilger.com/) estimates that about 1 million Iraqis have been killed as a direct result of, as well as fall out from (sectarian violence) the US invasion of Iraq. Is this not GENOCIDE? Are we like the Germans of Nazi German, killing people who are different? It is ok to bomb these people, kill innocence, for they do not look like us. They have different values, customs, economies, histories. I would say that there is a huge moral deficit in the ethos of America. That is my argument.
What are the numbers? As Americans eat popcorn and sat on couches, glued to the first night of bombing of Bagdad in 2003, did they ever think of what it might be like to have this happen to one of their own cities?
Are we thoughtless, cruel, crippled morally? Does Hollywood desensitize us to violence thousands of miles away, but bought and paid for by our defense budget (tax payer dollars)?
What is going on? A people fed lies, pacified by television, consumerism, and never taught to think critically.
Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, seem to become literature for a cultivated sector that considers itself liberal leaning, and critically postured, by one man, their words are isolated in a niche market of readership. Bill Moyers is another important figure in this equation that I would see as the amorality of the ethos of America.
To quote:
“War is a racket. It always has been. It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives. In the World War [World War I] a mere handful garnered the profits of the conflict. At least 21,000 new millionaires and billionaires were made in the United States during the World War. That many admitted huge gains in their income tax returns. How many other war millionaires falsified their tax returns no one knows. [Please note these are 1935 U.S. dollars. To adjust for inflation, multiply all figures X 10 or more]“-read more: http://www.wanttoknow.info/warcoverup
